FAQ - Vacation

My employee is a student. Do I need to pay them or accrue vacation for them?

Usually, all employees are entitled to vacation pay. To find out whether vacation must be accrued or not, you should refer to the relevant authorities. In Quebec, the CNESST enforces the laws in effect on this matter. For more details on the application of the current laws:

I usually "continue regular payroll" for my employee during the week(s) they are away on vacation. The vacation balance in their file is not up to date. How can I fix it?

Adjustments are used to correct accrued vacation. One adjustment per employee per year can be recorded. Once adjustments are made, the accrued vacation balances will be corrected.

Is the vacation pay rate modified by the software based on my employees' years of service?

No, the software never modifies the pay rate. It is the user's responsibility to validate and modify the rates that apply to their employees. The rate and duration of vacation are determined by the employee's years of continuous service. For more details, it is suggested to refer to the Act respecting labour standards.

Can I pay vacation separately from the regular pay?

Yes. You need to restart payroll preparation for the same date and select the employee concerned. This operation will create paystub #2 for this employee on that pay date.

Why is the vacation balance payable negative on the Pay stub?

Most likely, the amount used for vacation pay was greater than the accumulated annual vacation amount owed to the employee.
